SOUNDWAVES MUSIC FESTIVAL: WELCOME!
Monday, 16 October to Friday 20 October 2017
A word of welcome from Ms O’Sullivan
Welcome to St Kilian’s second Soundwaves Music Festival which will take place from Monday, 16 October to Friday, 20 October. We are very privileged and delighted to have so much participation from across the school community and from a very distinguished panel of artists who are giving of their time in the middle of busy music schedules.
One of the aims of the Music Syllabus is to promote ‘a culture of creative enjoyable engagement with Music’. I am passionate that people will love music if they feel it, experience it, hear it, and never close their minds to hearing things that sound differently. Essentially, it is life experience to attune oneself to the other (whoever or whatever that may be) and accept that it may not be the same as me but will only enhance and enlarge my world view. This is what I am hoping will happen in some small way this week for all of us: to hear the other.
I would like to thank our principal, Mr John Murphy, and the dedicated staff of St Kilian’s without whose support and encouragement this would not be possible. Finally, thank you to all our wonderful fun-loving students who are coordinating and participating in all of the events. Thank you to our guest artists for sharing their extraordinary talent with us.
We want to welcome you all wholeheartedly to any of the events and hope you have a fantastic time with us.
Louise O’Sullivan (Music Department, October 2017)

Rama, our instrumental teacher from Music Generation
Rama takes about 18 of our students each week after school on Mondays and Tuesdays for Music Generation and is brilliant with them. He may do a gig at some stage during the week. I’ll put it up here when confirmed. |
Brian O’Donnell and the students of St Martin de Porres Primary School, Tallaght
Brian is a primary school teacher and a beautiful traditional Irish flautist. Together with his students and an SNA, who is also a sound engineer, they compiled a CD which I heard during the summer. They are just brilliant. I invited them! They are coming and wanted to do the lunch-time concert. There are 52 students coming with him and they’ll be playing music, singing, etc. |
Tim Doyle, Traditional Uilleann Piper and Fiddler
Tim works with Music Generation. He is a really excellent performer. He also performed with us last year. He’ll show students the parts of the instruments and play a variety of different types of traditional Irish music for both instruments. |

This year's Music and Culture Week, from January 22nd to 26th, had a full programme of musical, dance and art activities. Highlights of the week included performances by the Garda Band and a performance of a Bach cantata, which is part of the Leaving Cert music curriculum. This recital, featuring a group of professional singers and musicians, including past-pupil Ross Scanlon, was attended by senior music students from other local schools and was a tremendous success. Everyone was also wowed by an excellent art exhibition, featuring the work of current and past-pupils.
